SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior football captain Justin Walz (Groton, CT) and sophomore women’s soccer standout Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) were honored Wednesday (Nov. 11) as the Western New England College Male and Female Athletes-of-the-Week.
Walz, a quarterback, passed for 148 yards and one touchdown (9 yards) and rushed for 73 yards and two additional scores (both on 1-yard runs) in a 31-10 victory over Nichols. He also became the first quarterback to pass for over 2,000 yards in a season, finishing with 2,091. The Golden Bears ended the season with a five-game winning streak and a 6-4 record for the most victories in the program’s 29-year varsity history. Walz is a Sport Management major.
Almeida, a midfielder, scored a goal in a 2-2 double overtime tie against Roger Williams in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament. In the match, she netted a penalty kick as the Golden Bears advanced 4-3 in the shootout. Almeida also tallied an insurance goal in the 2-0 win over Wentworth in the conference tournament semifinals. She is a Communication major.
