- The third-seeded Western New England College softball team dropped a 7-1 decision against top-seeded Endicott to finish second in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament Saturday afternoon (May 1).

The Golden Bears (26-19-1) advanced to the championship round after defeating second-seeded University of New England 6-1 in a morning contest.

Western New England College, who posted a 4-2 mark in the tournament, will now await word on a possible invitation to the ECAC New England Division III Championship.

The Golden Bears scored five runs in the third and collected 13 hits in eliminating the Nor'easters from the tournament.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine in raising her record to 9-3. She also contributed a RBI single in the third and a run-scoring double in the sixth.

The only hit Lempicki allowed was a solo homer by senior left fielder Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, RI)  in the bottom of the third inning.

Junior first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) had three hits, including a two-run double in the third. Junior catcher Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) had a pair of singles and scored twice. 

Also compiling two hits were senior center fielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) and sophomore shortstop Sara Barnes (Berkley, MA).

Endicott 6, Western New England College 1

The Gulls captured their eighth consecutive conference title to earn an automatic invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Junior Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, MA) pitched a five-hitter and fanned five to become a 20-game winner (20-5). 

Junior center fielder Ashley Wright (Merrimack, NH) gave the hosts a 1-0 with a solo homer in the second.

Senior second base player Sarah Spaziano (Norton, MA) went 3-for-3 with two runs, and was among six players with a RBI.

For the Golden Bears, senior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) had two hits, including a RBI single that cut the lead to 3-1 in the  fourth. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) (9-4) was the losing pitcher.

Endicott tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on its final three runs in the fifth.
