Jon Hayes enjoyed an All-American career while competing for the Western New England College men's lacrosse.
The Waltham, Massachusetts native is now getting taste of professional sports as a practice player with the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL).
Hayes is among eight individuals on the squad's practice squad that features 23 players on their active roster.
Boston opened its season with a 16-13 victory over the Denver Outlaws before 9,841 fans at Harvard Stadium on May 15.
While at WNEC, Hayes played a midfielder position and scored 102 points (68 goals, 34 assists) in three seasons. He received his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 2008.
Hayes was a two-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III All-American, gaining Third Team honors as a senior and honorable mention recognition in his junior campaign.
He also was twice selected to the All-New England intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) First Team.
Western New England College enjoyed considerable success with 45-10 record (81.8 winning percentage). The Golden Bears posted a 17-1 record his junior year (which set a school record for wins), captured the Pilgrim League Tournament title in their final season in the conference, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship.
Hayes helped lead Western New England College to a 15-5 mark his final season that included TCCC Tournament crown in its first season in the league, and another appearance in the national quarterfinals.
