CCC Preseason Coaches' Poll/Season Preview Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 18, 2016) - The Western New England University baseball team has been picked to finish fifth in the 2016 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) preseason coaches' poll, which was released today by the league office.

Endicott earned the top spot with 79 points and seven of the nine first place votes, while Salve Regina and Roger Williams were slotted second (67 points) and third (59), respectively, with each getting one of the remaining first place nods. Defending CCC champion Curry checked in at No. 4 with 55 points, just one ahead of Western New England (54). Gordon and Nichols garnered 26 points each, finishing in a tie for sixth, while Wentworth (20) and Eastern Nazarene (19) rounded out the poll in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Western New England is coming off a successful 2015 campaign that saw the Golden Bears finish second in the CCC regular season standings with an 11-5 mark in league play (19-19 overall), before reaching the ECAC New England Championship semifinals. Now in his third season as head coach and seventh year overall at Western New England, Dan Gomez will look to lead the Golden Bears to their first CCC title since 2012 and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013.

Senior shortstop and team captain Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) headlines a list of four Golden Bear returners that earned All-CCC recognition last spring, while senior second baseman Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) will look to build on his successful 2015 campaign after hitting .355 in his first season with the program. Senior right-handed pitcher David Cherry (Southbury, Conn.), who went 4-4 with a 2.55 ERA as a junior, will anchor the pitching staff along with senior lefty Tom Mahoney (Granville, Mass.).

Western New England opens its 2016 campaign against Waynesburg (Pa.) University on March 11 in Florida, the first of seven games for the Golden Bears at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The team returns to Trelease Park for its home opener against Brandeis on March 22, before kicking off conference play at Gordon on April 2.
