Golden Bears Move Up to Fourth in NEIBA Poll

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 3, 2016) -
The Western New England University baseball team has climbed one spot to No. 4 in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III Poll, which was released Monday afternoon.
 
Western New England (28-9, 13-3 CCC) capped its regular season schedule with a 5-1 record last week, which included doubleheader sweeps of Curry and Salve Regina on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, as the Golden Bears clinched the top seed in this week's CCC Tournament.
 
Senior infielder Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) was recognized for his efforts in helping Western New England finish the regular season strong, as he was named CCC Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday. Colmenares batted .643 (9-for-14) with a double, two home runs and eight RBI, while also drawing four walks and scoring seven runs.
 
Western New England moved up to fourth following a week in which the Golden Bears were tied at No. 5 with CCC rival Endicott. Southern Maine maintained its No. 1 ranking with 37 points and three first place votes, while Tufts also received three first place nods and checked in second with 34 points. Wheaton (30 points), Western New England (29) and Amherst (26) rounded out the top-five in the poll.
 
The Golden Bears also debuted at No. 5 in the first NCAA New England Regional Rankings, which were released last Thursday, trailing Southern Maine, Wheaton, Amherst and Endicott.
 
Western New England opens the CCC Tournament against sixth-seeded Curry on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Trelease Park.
