SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 22, 2016) -
The Western New England University baseball's team's 8-0 start to the 2016 campaign, the best in program history, has resulted in the Golden Bears earning their first national ranking since 2013.

Western New England entered the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25 this week at No. 21, following its undefeated trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational from March 11-19.

The D3baseball.com/NCBWA Poll, which is voted on by a panel of 25 sports information directors and media members from across the country, features just one other New England based program, as the University of Southern Maine (4-0) holds the No. 5 spot.

The Golden Bears also checked in at No. 3 in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III Poll of the spring, collecting one first place vote and 27 total points. Southern Maine topped the NEIBA Poll with 44 points and five first place nods, while Amherst College was slotted second with 35 points.

Western New England opened its season with a convincing 13-2 victory over Waynesburg (Pa.) on March 11, and hasn't slowed down since, earning an impressive doubleheader sweep of GNAC preseason favorite Saint Joseph's of Maine the following day, before rolling to a 14-6 win over SUNY Brockport and posting a thrilling, 6-5 walkoff win over Trinity last Monday. The Golden Bears capped their trip with wins over Clarkson (N.Y.), Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) and Calvin (Mich.), culminating in a 10-3 victory over the Knights on Saturday morning in Auburndale.

Through eight games, Western New England is hitting .392 (114-for-291) as a team, with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 71 runs scored (8.9/game). The Golden Bear pitching staff has also excelled, posting a 2.42 earned run average with 53 strikeouts in 67.0 innings.

Senior second baseman Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) is leading the way at the plate, hitting .455 (15-for-33) with three doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored. Colmenares was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week on March 15 before collecting NEIBA Player of the Week accolades today.

Junior infielder Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) has also enjoyed a strong start to the season, as he is hitting .400 (14-for-35) with three doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI, while Western New England is receiving significant contributions from freshmen Ben LaCroix (Branford, Conn.) and Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.).

Seniors David Cherry (Southbury, Conn.) and Tom Mahoney (Granville, Mass.) and freshman Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) have all earned victories in their first two appearances on the mound, with Mahoney's 0.75 ERA currently tops among the trio of starters.

Western New England (8-0) returns to action this afternoon with its home opener against Brandeis. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Trelease Park.
