Wetmore named Pitcher of the Week, Lacaire earns Player of the Week honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 6, 2017) – Sophomore right-handed pitcher Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore outfielder Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) of the Western New England University baseball team have been recognized with weekly awards from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), the league office announced this afternoon.
Wetmore was named CCC Pitcher of the Week, and Lacaire collected Player of the Week accolades after helping the Golden Bears earn a split with SUNY Old Westbury in their season-opening doubleheader yesterday in Yaphank, N.Y.
Making his first career start in game two, Wetmore tossed a no-hitter, striking out six batters and walking four during his 96-pitch performance. The sophomore became the first Western New England pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Trevor Breton accomplished the feat in 2013.
Lacaire led the Golden Bears at the plate, going a combined 6-for-8 out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order over the two games with two doubles, four runs scored, one walk and one RBI. His one-out single in the top of the first inning of game two sparked a two-run rally that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Western New England (1-1) heads south for its next eight games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Golden Bears open play in the Sunshine State against Illinois Wesleyan on Friday.
