Sophomore tossed no-hitter in first career start against SUNY Old Westbury on Sunday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 7, 2017) – After throwing a no-hitter in his first career start on Sunday, sophomore right-handed pitcher Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Conn.) of the Western New England University baseball team has received national recognition from D3baseball.com with his selection to the Team of the Week.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, recognizing performers at each position from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. Wetmore is among four starting pitchers across all of NCAA Division III to be honored for their performances last week.
Wetmore, who was also named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Pitcher of the Week for his efforts, struck out six batters and walked four during his 96-pitch performance as the Golden Bears defeated SUNY Old Westbury, 2-0, in game two to earn a doubleheader split in their season opener on Sunday. The sophomore became the first Western New England pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Trevor Breton accomplished the feat in 2013, and the first Golden Bear to be named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week since Matt Fedor in 2015.
Western New England, which heads south for its next eight games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, will be back in action against Illinois Wesleyan on Friday.
