Hamden, Conn. native threw no-hitter in Sunday's 2-0 victory over SUNY Old Westbury
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 8, 2017) – After being named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week yesterday, sophomore right-handed pitcher Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Conn.) of the Western New England University baseball team has earned more national recognition with his selection as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III Pitcher of the Week, it was announced this afternoon.
Making his first career start on Sunday in game two of Western New England's season-opening doubleheader against SUNY Old Westbury in Yaphank, N.Y., Wetmore produced the program's first no-hitter since 2013 to help the Golden Bears earn a split with their 2-0 victory. The sophomore struck out six batters and walked four during his 96-pitch performance, which also earned him Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Pitcher of the Week accolades.
As a freshman last season, Wetmore logged 9.2 innings of relief over six appearances, striking out eight batters and surrendering four runs on eight hits. A 2015 graduate of Hamden High School, Wetmore was a three-year letterwinner for the baseball program, helping lead the Green Dragons to the state tournament his senior season.
Western New England, which heads south for its next eight games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, will be back in action against Illinois Wesleyan on Friday.
