SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 20, 2017) – Sophomore left-hander Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) of the Western New England University baseball team has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.
In his only start of the week on Friday, Hamel went the distance and struck out seven batters while allowing just one unearned run on two hits as the Golden Bears picked up their first of two victories over No. 13 nationally ranked The College of New Jersey, 7-1. The sophomore retired the side in order in three innings and issued just two walks over his seven-inning, 94-pitch outing.
Hamel, who was named both the CCC and ECAC New England Rookie of the Year after going 7-1 with a 1.88 earned run average and 37 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched as a freshman last season, is 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched so far this spring.
Western New England (8-2), which completed a successful 7-1 trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational last week, is scheduled to open CCC play against Salve Regina University on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
