Johnson named Rookie of the Week, LaCroix recognized as Player of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 10, 2017) – Sophomore outfielder Ben LaCroix (Branford, Conn.) and freshman infielder Kevin Johnson (Waterford, Conn.) of the Western New England University baseball team have both earned weekly honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), it was announced on Monday afternoon.
LaCroix was named CCC Player of the Week, while Johnson collected CCC Rookie of the Week accolades after the duo helped lead Western New England to a 5-2 record in seven games last week.
LaCroix powered the Golden Bear offense, batting .375 (9-for-24) with two doubles, one home run and 13 RBI. He posted four multi-hit efforts and drove in multiple runs in three contests. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with three RBI in a 19-9 win over Gordon on Monday, before tallying two more hits, two RBI and two runs scored in Western New England's 17-0 victory over Keene State on Friday. LaCroix turned in another multi-hit effort (2-for-3) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Nichols, before driving in a career-high seven runs with two doubles and a three-run homer on Sunday in the second of two games against Wentworth.
Through 21 games this spring, LaCroix is hitting .343 (24-for-70) with four doubles, four home runs and a team-leading 22 RBI. He has also walked 19 times, scored 18 runs and stolen two bases.
Johnson appeared in five games last week, batting .333 (4-for-12) with five walks, two RBI, and nine runs scored. In Western New England's 14-1 win over Nichols, the freshman went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and one stolen base, before going a combined 2-for-4 with three walks and five runs scored in Sunday's doubleheader split against Wentworth.
Johnson has appeared in 14 games during his rookie campaign, including 13 of the last 15 overall. He is hitting .313 (10-for-32) with four RBI, 11 walks and 13 runs scored.
A 2016 graduate of Waterford High School, Johnson was a three-time All-Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC) selection in baseball for the Lancers, and was also a member of the basketball team.
Western New England (13-8, 4-4 CCC) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Curry.
