Burlington, Conn. native named DIII Honorable Mention National Pitcher of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 27, 2017) – Junior right-hander Jake Kawiecki (Burlington, Conn.) of the Western New England University baseball team has received National Pitcher of the Week honorable mention recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization announced on Thursday.
Kawiecki, who was also named Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday, won both of his starts last week while striking out nine batters and surrendering just three hits over 11 shutout innings on the mound. The junior has not allowed a run to score over his last 22 innings of work, dating back to March 30.
In his first start of the week on Tuesday at Suffolk, Kawiecki registered four strikeouts while giving up just one hit and issuing one walk over five scoreless frames in a 17-2 victory. He followed that up with six more shutout frames in Saturday's 12-0 win over Roger Williams, striking out five batters and yielding just two hits.
In six starts this season, Kawiecki is 3-1 with a 1.41 earned run average (4th in CCC) and 28 strikeouts in 32 innings. The Burlington, Conn. native has made 13 career appearances with 11 starts, posting a record of 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 43 punchouts in 56 frames.
Kawiecki is the second Golden Bear to be recognized by the NCBWA this season, as sophomore right-hander Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Conn.) was named National Pitcher of the Week back on March 8 after recording a no-hitter against SUNY Old Westbury in Western New England's season opening doubleheader.
Western New England (19-12, 8-6 CCC) hosts Brandeis in non-conference action today at 3:30 p.m.
