Karl Roberts, RJ Malson & Nick Connell join Golden Bear staff heading into 2017 campaign
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (July 31, 2017) – Western New England University head football coach Keith Emery announced additions to his coaching staff on Monday morning.
Karl Roberts (Defensive Backs), RJ Malson (Defensive Line) and Nick Connell (Running Backs) will join Emery's staff as assistant coaches heading into the 2017 campaign, which gets underway on Friday, September 1 when Western New England hosts Springfield College in the annual Pynchon SAW Game at Golden Bear Stadium.
Roberts, who graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. last May with a psychology degree, was a four-year starter at defensive back on the Quakers' football team. The Charlotte, N.C. native was a two-time All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selection and was voted team co-captain as a senior last fall. Roberts was also a member of Guilford's 2015 squad that posted a program best 9-1 record. He was selected to participate in the National Bowl senior all-star game at the conclusion of his collegiate career.
Malson, a 2015 graduate of Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. earned his bachelor's degree in history and was a member of the Tomcats' football team after transferring from the University of Mount Union. Malson served as an assistant coach working with the defensive linemen at Thiel during the 2015 season before gaining further experience in a similar role at Milliken University in 2016.
Rounding out Emery's additions is Connell, who begins his coaching career following a standout four-year playing career as a running back with the Golden Bears. Connell, who graduated in May with a degree in psychology, racked up 2,778 yards on the ground, good for fourth in program history. The East Marion, N.Y. native was a two-time All-New England Football Conference (NEFC) selection, garnering D3football.com All-East Region second team accolades as a senior last fall.
Jason Lebeau '10/'16 (Offensive Coordinator), Alex Bresner (Defensive Coordinator), Pat Welkley (Defensive Line), Kyle Jones '15 (Wings), and Dylan Berardelli (Offensive Line) all return as assistants for Emery, who begins his 13th season at the helm of the Western New England football program in 2017.
