Service, Chirco, Lalumia & Fedorchak recognized following win over St. Lawrence

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 1, 2017) – Four members of the Western New England University football team have received weekly awards from Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC Football) following the Golden Bears' 27-24, overtime victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday.

Senior quarterback Anthony Service (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while junior linebacker Mike Chirco (Weedsport, N.Y.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Additionally, junior punter Vinny Lalumia (Maywood, N.J.) collected his second straight Special Teams Player of the Week award, and freshman wide receiver Steven Fedorchak (Guilderland, N.Y.) was recognized as the Offensive Rookie of the Week.

Western New England overcame a late two-touchdown deficit for the second consecutive week to defeat St. Lawrence on Saturday. Trailing 21-7 with ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Golden Bears used a strong defensive performance and clutch play from Service to force overtime before walking off with a thrilling victory in the extra period.

Service accounted for 304 yards of total offense (193 passing, 111 rushing) and three touchdowns en route to his third career New England Football Conference/CCC Football weekly award. After being held to just 81 combined yards (75 passing, six rushing) and no touchdowns in the first half, he led Western New England's late comeback, compiling 223 yards (105 rushing, 118 passing) and three touchdowns in the second half and overtime. Service led scoring drives of 96 and 85 yards in the fourth quarter, and converted a key fourth down in overtime before throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to junior Jared Wolfe (Seaford, N.Y.).

Chirco, who appeared in eight games and made 11 tackles as a reserve linebacker in 2016, was Western New England's leading tackler with a career-high 17 stops (six solo, 1.5 for loss) on Saturday. Through five games, Chirco ranks second on the team and tied for fifth in the conference with 48 tackles (9.6 per game).

Lalumia repeats as Special Teams Player of the Week after punting eight times with an average of 37.3 yards per kick (long of 47) against the Saints. He pinned three punts inside the St. Lawrence 20-yard line, while two of his kicks were fair caught and another went for a touchback.

Rounding out Western New England's quartet of weekly award winners is Fedorchak, who recorded a team-high matching three receptions for 30 yards against the Saints. The freshman has appeared in three of five games this season, totaling eight catches for 134 yards and one touchdown.

The Golden Bears, who sit at 3-2 this season heading into their bye week, open their CCC Football slate at home against Endicott College on Saturday, October 14.
