SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 20, 2019) – Senior quarterback Alec Coleman (Arlington, Mass.) and sophomore linebacker Joshua Salem (Dracut, Mass.) of the Western New England University football team have both received weekly awards from Commonwealth Coast Football, the league office announced on Sunday.
Coleman was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Salem received Defensive Player of the Week honors following Western New England's 38-31 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.
Coleman, who returned to action after missing Western New England's last two games, accounted for 330 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as the Golden Bears posted their sixth straight victory over the Seahawks. The senior signal caller completed 17-of-29 pass attempts for 262 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing 12 times for 68 yards (5.7 avg.) and another score.
Coleman, the 2018 CCC Football Offensive Player of the Year, earns his first weekly award this season after being honored four times as a junior last fall. In four games this year, he has completed 71-of-101 (70.3%) passes for 1,030 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Coleman has also gained 177 rushing yards on 35 attempts (5.1 avg.) with four touchdowns.
Salem collects Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the first time in his career after recording a career-high 16 tackles (8 solo) and an interception in Saturday's win over Salve.
Salem, a four-time CCC Football Defensive Rookie of the Week as a freshman last season, currently ranks second on the team and fourth in the conference with 55 tackles.
Western New England (5-1, 3-0 CCC Football) travels to Milton, Mass. next Saturday to take on Curry College, with opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
