BIDDEFORD, Maine --The University of New England scored a trio of markers while holding Western New England University shotless in the first half on the way to a 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory on Saturday at the Big Blue Turf. UNE moves to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the CCC while the Golden Bears now stand at 3-2 and 0-1 in the conference, losing back-to-back games for the first time this season.
It took the Nor'easters a little more than 15 minutes to get on the scoreboard, as Desirae LeBlanc carried possession into the circle and pushed it forward to Vonde Saunders, who curled and placed a shot into the corner.
Just 57 seconds later, Nicole Matarozzo put one in from the left side off a feed from Brooke Marshall on a penalty corner play near the top of the arc.
The hosts increased the margin to 3-0 with 54 ticks left in the opening period, when Matarozzo slipped a leading pass around the last defender to Abbey Rouillard in the circle for a drive into the cage.
Matarozzo netted another goal in the 51st minute, making a 30-yard run past the back line and around the goalie to guide it into the net.
With less than seven minutes remaining, Western New England broke up the shutout bid as Emily Antinozzi moved up the right side on a break and drilled a shot just inside the near post from the edge of the circle. It was the freshman's first career collegiate goal.
The disparity in shots finished at 20-3, after UNE led 14-0 in the category during the initial 35 minutes. Holly Smith did not record a save to earn the decision for the Nor'easters, while sophomore Grace Trupe made seven stops on the other end for the Golden Bears.
Both sides will continue CCC play on Tuesday, as Western New England entertains Gordon College (4 p.m.) and UNE visits Endicott College (7 p.m.).
