Golden Bears open 2017-18 campaign at Springfield College next Wednesday, Nov. 15
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 8, 2017) – The Western New England University men's basketball team has been selected to finish sixth in the 2017-18 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
Nichols College was tabbed as the CCC preseason favorite among the conference's head coaches with 99 points and nine of a possible ten first place votes. Gordon College (82 points) and Roger Williams (80) finished second and third, respectively, while Endicott College received the final first place vote, finishing fourth with 70 points. Wentworth took the fifth spot with 64 points, followed by Western New England (42), Eastern Nazarene College (35), University of New England (34), Salve Regina University (33) and Curry College (11).
Now in his third season at Western New England, head coach Colin Tabb will look to build his young squad into a CCC contender in 2017-18.
Junior guard Mikey Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) is the lone returning upperclassman on a team that features five freshmen and seven sophomores. Pettway is coming off a 2016-17 campaign in which he earned All-CCC third team honors after averaging 13.5 points, 4.2 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Mayo Aina (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore guard Mike McGuire (Garden City, N.Y.) will look to take on expanded roles this year following their strong freshman seasons.
Western New England opens its 2017-18 campaign at crosstown rival Springfield College on Wednesday, November 15, before traveling to Amherst College for the Ken Wright Tournament on November 17-18. The Golden Bears also play on the road at Becker (Nov. 26) before opening CCC play at home against Roger Williams on Wednesday, November 29.
