Abbott named Golfer of the Week, Cox collects Rookie of the Week accolades
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 23, 2018) – Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) and freshman Cameron Cox (Bowdoinham, Maine) of the Western New England University men's golf team have both been recognized with weekly awards from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Abbott earns CCC Golfer of the Week honors for the third time this season, while Cox has been named the CCC Rookie of the Week for the first time.
Western New England competed in two tournaments last week and turned in second place finishes at both the Rich Korzec Invitational on Tuesday at Blackstone National Golf Club, and the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Invitational over the weekend at Cranston Country Club.
Abbott led the way for the Golden Bears at both events, beginning with his second place effort in the 35-player field on Tuesday with a two-over par score of 74.
The senior then claimed medalist honors over the weekend at the Wildcat Invitational, as his two-day score of 146 (73+73) paced the 99-golfer field.
Competing as an individual at the Rich Korzec Invitational, Cox's score of 81 was good for a tie for 12th place. The freshman followed that up with a 14th place finish at the Wildcat Invitational after carding a 77 and an 80 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Western New England will be right back in action on Tuesday at the Westfield State Spring Invitational, held at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, Mass. The Golden Bears then travel to Salem, Mass. for the CCC Championship this weekend at Kernwood Country Club.
