SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2018) – Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) and freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) of the Western New England University men's golf team have been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Golfer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday morning.
Abbott and Zogby played key roles as the Golden Bears won both of the tournaments they competed in last week. Western New England finished first at the Westfield State Spring Invitational at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, Mass. on Tuesday, before cruising to the program's fourth CCC title over the weekend at Kernwood Country Club in Salem, Mass.
Abbott earns Golfer of the Week recognition for the second straight week and fourth time this season after claiming medalist honors at the CCC Championship with a 36-hole score of 142 (71+71). The senior also tied for third place on Tuesday with a score of 78.
Zogby paced the Golden Bears at the Westfield State Invitational, as he shared medalist honors with Owls' junior Garrett Desmond after carding a three-over par 75. Over the weekend, Zogby tied for eighth place overall with scores of 78 and 74 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Western New England earned the CCC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina from May 15-18.
