Golden Bears were sixth least penalized team in NCAA DII/DIII during the regular season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 24, 2017) – The Western New England University ice hockey team has been recognized by the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with the league's Team Sportsmanship Award, it was announced yesterday.
Western New England was the least penalized team in the CCC during the regular season with just 227 penalty minutes, 60 fewer than the next closest team. The Golden Bears averaged just 9.1 penalty minutes per game, which ranks sixth among the 85 NCAA Division II/III ice hockey programs.
"I'm very proud of our team for winning this award," head coach Greg Heffernan said. "It goes to show that not only are we very disciplined, but we are also representing the University with class."
Western New England (8-15-2), which earned the No. 8 seed in the CCC Tournament, will be on the road at top-seeded Endicott College tomorrow afternoon for a quarterfinal round matchup. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.
