Golden Bears notch first CCC victory
BOSTON, Mass. (October 9, 2018) – Senior midfielder Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) scored twice to lift the Western New England University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Sweeney Field.
Liccardi powered the Western New England offense with his third and fourth goals of the season, while junior goalkeeper Dylan Husted (South Deerfield, Mass.) made four saves to earn his second win this fall.
Wentworth's lone goal was scored by junior midfielder Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.).
Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, when Liccardi scored on a feed from junior Brendan Claflin (Burlington, Mass.) following a throw in by sophomore Matt Remillard (Palmer, Mass.).
The Golden Bears led by the same margin at the break, but Wentworth equalized just 3:16 in the second half when Price buried a free kick inside the left post.
Less than four minutes later, however, Liccardi put Western New England back in front with a penalty kick goal, and the Golden Bears didn't relinquish their advantage the rest of the way.
• The Golden Bears outshot the Leopards 18-11, including 12-8 in the second half.
• Husted made all four of his saves in the second half.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, as Western New England (8-4-2, 1-2-2 CCC) hosts Curry and Wentworth (5-8-1, 1-3-0 CCC) continues its homestand against Endicott.
