Western New England College opens season with spring break trip to Florida

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England College men’s tennis team opens its 2009 season at 4:00 p.m. Sunday (March 15) against LeTourneau University of Texas at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The Golden Bears will play four matches in the Sunshine State during their spring break trip before returning home to meet Endicott on Tuesday, March 24.

Last year Western New England College posted a 10-6 record and tied for fifth in its inaugural season in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-3 mark.

Coach Jenn Kolins returns four top players in seniors co-captains Alex Boutin (Bristol, CT) and Jason Lee (Scarsdale, NY), and sophomores Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) and Brian Relihan (Orange, CT).

Boutin compiled a 22-8 record a year ago, including a 12-3 mark in single competition (10-3 at the No. 2 flight). A Mechancial Engineering major, he was named the team MVP and voted to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team.

Lee posted a 21-10 mark that featured an 8-4 record at the No. 3 singles position and 6-6 ledger at No. 3 doubles.

Jones sported an 18-14 record highlighted by an impressive 10-6 mark at No. 1 doubles with Relihan (the WNEC Rookie-of-the-Year) who was 25-7 after posting a 15-1 singles mark (12-1 at the fifth flight).

Boutin (doubles, singles), Lee (singles), Jones (doubles) and Relihan (doubles/singles) were All-Conference selections.

The Golden Bears’ roster also includes junior Greg Wainwright (Marlborough, MA), sophomores Steve Genovese (North Haven, CT), Matt Minahan (Plymouth, MA), and Chase Vajcovec (Webster, MA).

There are three freshmen, Jonathan Grover (Webster, MA), JonPaul Ouellete (Bethlehem, CT), and James Puchacz (Manchester, NH).

The Golden Bears enter the spring portion of their schedule with an 0-1 record after losing to Springfield College in the fall.
