MAITLAND, Fla. - The Western New England College men's tennis team rolled past Knox College (Ill.) 8-1 for its first win of the season Tuesday (March 17).
The Golden Bears won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches.
Sophomore Brian Relihan (Orange, CT) took his No. 2 singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over freshman Sam Frank (River Forest, IL), and teamed with classmate Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) for an exciting 9-7 win over junior Jared Kitchen (Galesburg, IL) and senior Nick Craig (Verona, WI).
Also winning for Western New England College were senior co-captain Jason Lee (Scarsdale, NY) at number four singles, sophomore Steve Genovese (North Haven, CT), number five singles, and freshman JonPaul Ouellete (Bethlehem, CT), number six singles.
Senior co-captain Alex Boutin (Bristol, CT) and Lee won their number two doubles match while Genevese/Ouellete took their number three doubles match,
The Golden Bears are 1-1 on their visit to the Sunshione State and 1-2 overall.
Knox may have an 0-6 record, but the Illinois school has one of the nation's more interesting nicknames ... Prairie Fire.
Western New England College also sends along its condolences to the Knox athletic family on the recent passing of former coach and assistant athletics director Tim Heimann who was a popular figure on campus.
