Golden Bears open 2018 campaign at Norwich University on March 6
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 16, 2018) – The Western New England University men's tennis team has been picked to finish sixth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Friday by the league office.
Western New England received 36 points in the poll, which is voted on by all nine CCC head coaches.
Nichols College was selected as the preseason favorite with 78 points and six first-place votes, while Eastern Nazarene finished second with 74 points and the remaining three first-place tallies.
Roger Williams (55 points), Endicott (54 points) and Gordon (53 points) rounded out the top-five, while Wentworth (27 points) took the seventh spot and Curry and Salve Regina tied for eighth with 14 points each.
After posting a 3-5 CCC record in each of the last three years, Western New England will look to get back to the .500 mark this spring. Now in her 15th season at the helm of the men's tennis program, head coach Jenn Kolins has established the Golden Bears as a consistent contender in the CCC.
The young Western New England squad will be led by junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.), who both earned All-CCC accolades in 2017. Sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) will also be a key contributor after posting an 8-7 record as a freshman last season.
Western New England opens its 2018 campaign at Norwich University on Tuesday, March 6. The Golden Bears will play several matches in Florida during their spring break trip later in the month, before CCC play gets underway at home against Wentworth on March 27.
