Golden Bears open 2017 campaign on March 11 against UMass Boston in Florida
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 1, 2017) – The Western New England University softball team has been selected as the preseason favorite in the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Coaches Poll, which was released today by the league office.
The Golden Bears received 92 points and four of a possible ten first place votes in a poll of the CCC's ten head coaches. Endicott finished second with 88 points and three first place nods, while Salve Regina (83 points, two first place votes) and the University of New England (5 points, one first place vote) followed in third and fourth, respectively. Roger Williams (61) points checked in at No. 5, while Eastern Nazarene (41 points), Nichols (39), Curry (32), Gordon (28), and Wentworth (11) rounded out the final five spots in the poll.
Western New England, which has captured back-to-back regular season CCC titles, will look to make it three in a row this spring. The Golden Bears return a pair of All-CCC performers from last season, including the Player of the Year in senior shortstop Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) and senior catcher Corianna DeLisi (Tuxedo, N.Y.), a second team selection.
Senior Samantha DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) and junior Sarah Broderick (Woodbury, Conn.), who both tossed 63.1 innings in the circle last season, will lead the Western New England pitching staff. Head coach Lori Mayhew-Wood '95 begins her 21st campaign at the helm of her alma mater in 2017 after earning CCC Coach of the Year honors in each of the last two seasons and reaching the 500-win milestone last spring.
Western New England begins its ten-game, season-opening trip in Florida against UMass Boston on March 11, before returning north to kick off both the home and CCC portion of its schedule against Eastern Nazarene on March 24.
