DeLisi earns second Player of the Week honor, Uliase recognized as Pitcher/Rookie of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 3, 2017) – Two members of the Western New England University softball team were recognized when the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) announced its weekly awards on Monday afternoon. Senior catcher Corianna DeLisi (Tuxedo, N.Y.) earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, and freshman pitcher Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) was named both the Pitcher and Rookie of the Week.
DeLisi and Uliase helped lead the Golden Bears to a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Nazarene College in their CCC opener last Thursday. Uliase tossed a complete game shutout in the opener, striking out four batters and allowing five hits (all singles) over her seven innings of work. DeLisi led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field before coming in to score the run that would stand as the game-winner in the eventual 2-0 victory. The senior added an infield single in the bottom of the second.
In game two, DeLisi slugged the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the third inning and recorded an RBI groundout in the fourth as the Golden Bears completed the sweep with a 4-3 triumph in eight innings. Through 12 games this season, DeLisi is hitting .410 (16-for-39) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and nine RBI. She has also walked six times and scored 11 runs.
Uliase has appeared in six contests with five starts during her rookie campaign, and the freshman is 4-1 with a 2.26 earned run average and 26 strikeouts in 31.0 innings. She has posted three complete game efforts and earned one save.
Western New England (10-2, 2-0 CCC) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Endicott.
