PAXTON, Mass. - Senior guard Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, NH) scored 20 points as the Western New England College women's basketball team defeated host Anna Maria 57-54 Wednesday evening (Feb. 17) to clinch a spot in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) playoffs.
The Golden Bears, who have won four of their last five contests, are now 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the league with one game remaining in the regular season. The AMCATS drop to 10-14 and 2-10 in the conference.
Anna Maria led 32-28 before WNEC took the lead for good when Al-Darraji drained a three-pointer for a 44-42 lead with 8:38 remaining.
The AMCATS trailed by one at 55-54 after freshman guard Tonique Adkins (New Haven, CT) sank two free throws at the 2:37 mark. Al-Darraji made two charity shots with 50 seconds left and the Golden Bears got the win when freshman center Chelsea Blair (Holland, MA) missed a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining.
Western New England College received 10 points apiece senior forward Caitlin Powers (Scotia, NY) and freshman guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT). Powers made 4-of-8 shots coming off the bench and had three rebounds with a pair of blocks and steals. Savino also had three rebounds along with four assists.
Junior forward Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) and sophomore forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Sophomore guard Samantha Ashton (Worcester, MA) led Anna Maria with a game-high 23 points, four rebounds, and three blocks.
Blair finished with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds to go along with seven of the team's 12 blocks. Freshman guard Alison McCarthy (Lynn, MA) also netted 11 points.
WNEC visits Colby-Sawyer on Saturday (Feb. 20) before advancing to the conference tournament next Tuesday (Feb. 23) against an opponent and site to be determined.
