SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--New Western New England University wrestling coach Mike Sugermeyer has announced the Golden Bears' 2015-16 schedule, opening the season officially on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Roger Williams University quadrangular in Bristol, R.I.
Fans can catch their first glimpse of the new-look Golden Bears on Friday, Oct. 24, when the team will conduct an intrasquad scrimmage in the Alumni Healthful Living Center (AHLC) at 1 p.m.
The RWU quad includes the host Hawks, Bridgewater State and SUNY Oneonta, starting at 1 p.m.
Western New England remains on the road for the rest of the month of November competing on Saturdays, including Nov. 7 at Ursinus College Fall Brawl in Collegeville, Pa.; Nov. 14 at Centenary College; and Nov. 21 at the Springfield College Doug Parker Invitational.
On Thursday, Dec. 3, the Golden Bears will make their AHLC home debut versus Rhode Island College for a 7 p.m. dual match. RIC is the alma mater of Coach Sugermeyer, who graduated in 2013 and was a senior captain, All-NCAA Northeast Region, All-New England and All-Pilgrim League All-Star for the Anchormen.
Two days later, Western New England is back on the road at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday. Dec. 5. This signals the end of the fall semester for the Golden Bears.
The calendar turns to January on Saturday the 9th when WNE will make a return trip to the Ursinus campus for the North-South Duals.
Western New England will be home for two consecutive dates during the month, hosting Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Jan. 13 (6 p.m.) and three days later bringing in Johnson & Wales, Norwich University and Coast Guard Academy for a quad event. The matches start at noon.
Then for the next three weeks, WNE will be busy competing in multi-team events: Saturday, Jan. 23 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships at Bridgewater State; Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Johnson and Wales University Wildcat Open in Providence, R.I.; and Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Springfield City Championships held at Springfield Technical Community College.
Western New England will take part in a tri-match at Trinity College with Southern Maine on Sunday, Feb. 7 (11 a.m.) in West Hartford, Conn.
The Golden Bears will have Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 14, when Daniel Webster College invades the AHLC for a noon start time.
Western New England concludes the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the NEWA Futures Tournament at Roger Williams.
The NCAA Division III Wrestling Northeast Regional Championships will be Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28, here in the Pioneer Valley at Springfield College, followed by the national championships on March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
