SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University wrestling team will open the 2019-20 season third in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rankings, with six Golden Bears receiving individual rankings.

Additionally, three Golden Bears garnered national recognition, highlighted by senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.), who is ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and D3wrestle.com. Boyle is coming off a 33-6 junior campaign that culminated in the Rowley, Mass. native capturing the 184-pound national title at the NCAA Division III Championships in Roanoke, Va.

Juniors Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) and Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) are both ranked 16th at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively, by D3wrestle.com. Monteiro made his NCAA Championships debut last season and finished with a 24-6 record, while Arborio went 29-8 as a sophomore and placed fifth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.

Boyle and Monteiro occupy the top spots in their respective weight classes in the NEWA Preseason Rankings, while Arborio is third at 133 pounds.

Also appearing in the NEWA rankings are junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.), who is fourth at 141 pounds, junior Dan Price (Nyack, N.Y.), who is fifth at 197 pounds, and sophomore Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.), who is sixth at 165 pounds.

Western New England's No. 3 preseason NEWA ranking is the program's highest during Mike Sugermeyer's tenure as head coach. The Golden Bears were ranked tenth heading into the 2018-19 campaign and 13th before the start of the 2017-18 season.

Western New England opens its season at the Ithaca Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
