SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University wrestling team turned in a third place finish on Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield College at the SC Field House.

The Golden Bears posted a team score of 91 on their way to third place in the 14-team field. Coast Guard won the team title with a score of 141.5, while New England College finished second with 102 points. Southern Maine (90.5) and Wesleyan (87) rounded out the top-five.

Five Golden Bears placed in their respective weight classes, led by junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.), who claimed the 157-pound title with a perfect 5-0 day. Seniors Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) and Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) both placed fifth at 149 and 174, respectively, as did junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) at 133. Freshman Romelo Medina (Springfield, Mass.) registered a sixth-place finish at heavyweight.

Monteiro's impressive day began with a 15-0 technical fall win over Verol Facey of Springfield Technical Community College. He then made quick work of Wesleyan's Scott Goodman, pinning him in the first round, before reaching the semifinals with a 6-2 decision over Nick Monteleone of Springfield College. Monteiro secured his spot in the title bout with a 7-3 decision over Yo Akiyama of Williams, and then completed his championship run with a 9-3 decision over Trinity's Kevin Lyskawa.
