Simmons wins eight of 14 races to overtake Western New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Visiting Simmons College won 8 of 14 events to earn a 135-114 victory over Western New England College in a women’s swimming meet Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

WNEC senior Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) continued her terrific season by winning three events, the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 16.20 seconds), 200 breaststroke (2:44.61), and the 100 individual medley (1:09.80).

Freshman Aimee Smachetti (Bristol, CT) once again provided valuable points by placing first in both the 200 butterfly (2:27.87) and 100 butterfly (1:06.02) while placing second in the 400 individual medley (5:32.30).

Sophomore Krista Goulet (Saco, ME) once again came through with a fine showing by winning the 100 backstroke (1:09.15) and placing second in the 50 freestyle (28.30).

Three swimmers each won two events for the visiting Shark, senior Whitney Airgood (Simsbury, CT) in the 200 freestyle (2:12.50) and 100 freestyle (1:00.60), sophomore Kaitlyn Ellis (Nantucket, MA) in the 50 freestyle (28.25) and 200 backstroke (2:30.85), and junior Keri-Ann Arsenault (Chester, NH) in the 400 individual medley (5:10.49) and 500 freestyle (5:40.33).

Simmons also captured both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay events.

Western New England College (5-8) will host Eastern Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, in its final meet of the season.
