Wheelock dives to close decision over Western New England College

BOSTON, Mass.  – Starting out 18 points behind due to no diving program, the Western New England College women’s swimming team dropped a 130-128 decision to host Wheelock College Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19).

Senior tri-captain Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) led the Golden Bears by winning both the 50-yard breaststroke (34.90 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:50.86).

Sophomore Krista Goulet (Saco, ME) also was a double winner capturing both the 50 (33.06) and 200 (2:29.27) backstroke events.

Freshman Aimee Smachetti (Bristol, CT) took first in the 200 butterfly (2:27.76), with her time just fourth-tenths of a second off the school record.

Also finishing first was the 200-medley relay squad of Goulet, Eggert, Smachetti, and sophomore Jessica Daluise (Montpelier, VT). Their winning time was 2:08.40.

"We had a great effort by all the members of our team," said Western New England College coach Andrea Daley.

Western New England College now has a 3-7 record heading in an away meet at Elms on Wednesday (Jan. 23).
