Western New England Opens CCC Play With 3-0 Win at Eastern Nazarene

Golden Bears have won 12 consecutive sets, now above .500 for the first time this season

QUINCY, Mass. (September 20, 2017) –
The Western New England University volleyball team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-12) victory at Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday evening at Lahue Physical Education Center. 

Top Performers
• Senior outside hitter Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the way for the Golden Bears, hitting .550 with 11 kills and no errors in 20 attempts. She also added 11 digs, three aces and one block assist.
• Sophomore setter Caitlyn Sibiskie (Rockfall, Conn.) also recorded a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs to go with two kills and two aces.
• Sophomore middle blocker Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) hit .444 with nine kills, three digs and two blocks.

• Freshman outside hitter Jenna Meacham (Millington, Mich.) paced the Lions with eight kills and nine digs.

Match Review
• Western New England set the tone for the match early in the first set, establishing a 9-1 lead en route to a 25-10 triumph.
• The Golden Bears hit a blistering .548 in the second set with 17 kills and no errors in 31 attempts. Leading 10-5 early, Western New England pulled away with an 8-0 run that featured kills from four different players on its way to a 25-9 win.
•.Eastern Nazarene held an 8-7 advantage early in the third frame, but the Golden Bears won nine of the next ten points with the help of five Lion errors to claim a 16-9 lead. Holmes recorded four kills late in the set to help seal the sweep for Western New England.

• The Golden Bears hit a season-best .370 with 39 kills and just five errors in 92 attempts.
•.Kornberg's double-double is her second of the season, with the first coming in last Thursday's five-set loss at WPI.
• Western New England, which is now above .500 for the first time this season, has won 12 consecutive sets following last week's loss at WPI.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, as Western New England (7-6, 1-0 CCC) hosts Wentworth at 2 p.m., and Eastern Nazarene (6-7, 0-1 CCC) travels to Curry for a tri-match with the Colonels and Bay Path.
